Directions Materials: DK weight yarn, about 100 yds. Size 6 circular 16" needle. Yarn should be soft and WARM (wool blend, washable is great)and in neutral colors (beige, tan, black, navy)
This hat can also be made in worsted weight yarn, using 84 stitches and a #8 needle, and colors can have a bit more leeway - since some soldiers like to sleep in them at night when it's freezing outside and they have to huddle down in a sleeping bag.
Since head sizes vary, cast on 88 (96) stitches. Work in K2, P2 rib for 6 rows, then knit around for a total of 7 inches. Hat can also be done entirely in K2, P2 rib, if you choose.
Begin decrease: Round 1 - Knit 6, K2tog around. Round 2 and all even rounds, knit without decreasing. Round 3 - Knit 5, K2tog around. Round 5 - Knit 4, K2tog around. Continue in this way until the last round of K2tog around. Cut yarn and pull through all stitches together. Weave in ends.
