Directions TWO sizes - medium and large - To fit most adults - if you are doing this for an ARMY BOOTIE - it doesn't matter what size it turns out - someone will be able to wear it!

Cast on 28 or 32 stitches. Work in K2, P2 rib for 15 rounds.
Work heel over 14(16) stitches -on right side, Slip 1, Knit 13(15). On wrong side, Slip 1, P13(15). Work for 15 rows total, ending after a knit row.
Turn heel - Purl 9(10), P2tog, P1, turn. (There will be stitches left on the needle before turning). Slip one, Knit 5, K2tog, K1, turn. Slip 1, P6, P2tog, P1,turn. Slip 1, K7, K2tog, K1. Pick up 7 stitches along side of heel flap with one needle. Combine all the remaining instep stitches on one needle. With empty needle knit across 14(16) instep stitches. With new needle pick up 7 stitches across other side of heel flap and knit 5 stitches from the heel turn area. Slip the remaining 5 stitches on the first needle. You are now back to 38 stitches divided on three needles.
Your row begins with needle one, starting at the bottom of the heel. Needle two holds the instep stitches. Needle 3 goes down the other side of the gusset.
Round 1 - knit
Round 2 - on Needle one, knit to three stitches before the end, K2tog, ke. On needle two, knit across. On needle three, K1, SSK, Knit to end.
Repeat these two rounds until you are back to the orgininal number of stitches (28 or 32).
Work even until foot measures desired length (to the base of the big toe) - approx 25 - 30 rows from where you picked up the heel gusset stitches for medium, 35 rows for large.
Toe Decreases: Make decreases as you did for the gusset (as above) but IN ADDITION, you will decrease on needle two: K1, SSK, work to three stitches before the end, K2tog, k1. Continue decrease until you have half your original number of stitches. Kitchener remaining stitches closed. Weave in your ends.
