Directions This curved, shaped cape has stockinette and reverse stockinette bands - 13 bands in all, starting and ending with main color in reverse stockinette . Curved shape is made using short rows - there are only 2 rows of color on each edge and 10 in the middle. When you switch colors, the first row with main color will always be knit on the right side for a smooth color shift.

Sizes : small (48") or large (53") by approx 16" long in mid back.

Materials - Worsted weight yarn, 400 yards in main color (MC) and 150 yards each of two contrasting colors (CC1 and CC2). Size 7 circular needles. Size 6 needles for tie.
Gauge - 17 st/4 inches. Exact gauge not critical&.

With MC cast on 210 (230) stitches and knit one row on wrong side for setup.

Work 20 row pattern:
1 . Purl to 3 stitches before the end, wrap and turn (w&t). (see wrap and turn directions at the end of the pattern)
2 - knit to 3 stitches before the end, w&t
3 - purl to 5 stitches before last turn, w&t
4 - knit to 5 stitches before last turn, w&t
5 - purl to 7 stitches before last turn, w&t
6 - knit to 7 stitches before last turn, w&t
7 - purl to 15 stitches before last turn, w&t
8 - knit to 15 stitches before last turn, w&t
9 - purl all stitches to end
10 - knit all stitches to end
CHANGE TO CC1 - you do not need to cut main color, since you only have 2 rows at the end and can easily carry up the yarn
11 - knit to 3 stitches before end, w&t
12 - purl to 3 stitches before end, w&t
13 - knit to 5 stitches before last turn, w&t
14 - purl to 5 stitches before last turn, w&t
15 - knit to 7 stitches before last turn, w&t
16 - purl to 7 stitches before last turn, w&t
17 - knit to 15 stitches before last turn, w&t
18 - purl to 15 stitches before last turn, w&t
19 - knit all the stitches
20 - purl all the stitches

SWITCH TO MAIN COLOR:
Now you will begin DECREASES on each row 1 of the pattern.:
21 - Knit 20(30). *K2tog, K10. work from * across to last 20(30) stitches making 15 decreases before the last 20(30) stitches. Wrap and turn when you are 3 stitches from the end, as you did in row 1.Repeat rows 2 - 20, alternating CC1 with CC2.
Repeat the above sequence for a total of 6 color bands. On each ROW 1 of the pattern, you will decrease 15 stitches, having one less stitch between decreases (row 41 has K2tog, K9; row 61 has K2tog, K8; row 81 has K2 tog, K7, etc&. until you have 120(140) stitches remaining. Bind off with main color, but don't cut yarn.

Ties - Using smaller needles, pick up 13 stitches along short edge of cape and work in K1 P1 rib for 21 inches or desired length. Bind off. Repeat for other side.

WRAP AND TURN - slip next stitch to right needle, move yarn to front if knitting or back if purling, slip stitch back and turn work and go back the other way. It is useful to have two locking stitch markers of different colors to mark your place. Keep note of the color you come to first as a helpful reminder of where you are in the pattern.
