Directions My dear pregnant daughter-in-law asked me to make her a scarf to match her new winter hat. Here's the result. Once you "get" the pattern row, you can take this with you anywhere to work on. It came out 6" by about 80" so there's plenty to wrap around.
Materials needed: 300 yards of heavy worsted weight yarn. I used Gedifra's fashion Trend Surprise for a soft, machine washable product. Size 10.5 needles to give it a soft, lofty feel. If you use size 9 (the size normally recommended for worsted weight), it will be much more narrow.
Cast on 27 stitches. Knit 2 rows. Begin pattern: (see note below)
Row 1: K2, *YO, K4, slip 1, K2tog, PSSO, K4, YO, K1. repeat from *, ending K2 instead of K1.
Row 2: K2, purl to last 2 stitches, K2
when just enough yarn is left, or you've reached your desired length, starting with a purl side row, knit 3 rows and then bind off.
Steam block your scarf, as this pattern tends to get a bit lumpy otherwise.
NOTE: When working any pattern with garter stitch edges, I like to get a cleaner look than garter usually gives you. So I always knit into the BACK of the last stitch of every row, and SLIP the first stitch as if to knit. Try it - you'll like the result.
This makes a nice long scarf to ward off the winter chill.
